The Professional English Horn Reed

The Professional English horn reed is at least 90% finished. It will play very well right out of the box, and it may play even better with a single, modest adjustment.

You have a choice of staples, either the Glotin brass tube, or an equivalent according to availability, or a bronze Chudnow tube. The reed is supported with a brass wire unless you specify unwired. It comes with some airline tubing placed for an optimal seal at the bocal.

The tube cane is 11-11.5mm diameter, gouged at 0.70 in the center and 0.55 on the sides with a .02+/- variance.

The shape is an RDG -1. The blank is 60 mm in length.  The finished length is about 56mm. The sides of the blend are positioned at about 52mm.

As the photo shows, there is some extra cane on the sides of the plateau, blend, and tip should you wish to adjust the focus and tone color.

CHUDNOW STAPLES: Chudnow tubes are a cut above, very long lived and, yes, they do make a difference in how the reed feels and sounds. They’re expensive! But to me, they’re worth it. If you order your reeds on these tubes, I will recycle them for you. Send me your spent reeds on your Chudnow tubes, and I will rebuild your new reed on that same tube for the “recycled” reduced-price option.
