Profile Options:
The tip and blend are thinned to almost clipping thickness, but not quite. The bark is removed along the full length of the vibrating surfaces, preserving a heavy spine and wide ribs. The sides of the blend are marked and faintly scraped in on the sides for reference. The tip is showing some blend and corner differentiation with backlighting. The tip is left unclipped to provide some stability to the cane as it dries and shrinks.

Profile Options:
The tip and blend are thinned almost to clipping thickness, but not yet. The plateau and back resonance areas are debarked along the full length of the vibrating surface of the reed, preserving a heavy spine and barked ribs. The sides of the blend are marked and faintly scraped in on the sides for reference. The end of the tip will show some blend and corner differentiation with backlighting. The tip is left unclipped to try to prevent the heavy blades from curling at the edges as much as possible. I recommend you soak it thoroughly and thin all areas down aggressively before you clip the tip open.

I HATE SELLING OBOE BLANKS! I can only guarantee the cane is straight, and the reed seals airtight when I bind it. I never stop at the blank stage. I find the cane needs to be relaxed into a semblance of the proper tip opening as soon as possible after binding, and only then should it be allowed to dry completely out. I get the most consistent results when I follow this routine, rather than letting the fledgling reed dry and shrink with too much wood in it.
